FTC Charges Canadian Defendants in Business Directory Scam
Will these scams never end? This 'complaint' details the process of how such a directory scam works. What it doesn't say is exactly what actions are being made to shut them down, as they are in Canada and the complaint is from the FTC here in the states.
And the Commutel directory scam continues to go on, as I see people finding this blog searching on that name (I originally posted the spelling Comutel). One reader who they got 'authorization' from, says that they shipped via UPS using their account #, with a return address of a Mailboxes Etc. in Midland, MI, a couple-hour drive for a Canadian.

Just been hit in Illinois. And they are persistent. The "collection" phone calls have been going on for several months. I thought this was a scam and was glad to find so much confirmation.

The magic word is "Scam."
I just received yet another call from Commutel. The guy mentioned that I had talked with them back in October to cancel my listing and wanted to let me know that my final bill had been reduced from $525.00 to $499.00.
I objected to having to pay anything as I told the caller, "I tell you guys every time that we are not interested and we have said cancel, cancel, cancel a million times and you keep coming back that we owe you something." Then I stated, "This is a scam!"
The caller immediately hung-up.
I was surprised they didn't try to convince me otherwise. It simply confirms in my mind that it is a scam and they don't like hearing that word. The next call I get, I will let them know I'm contacting the State's Attorney and hang up on them.
Just say, "No. This is a scam." And see what the response is.
I hope this helps someone.

Yes, we are being targeted yet again. Do not talk to anyone calling from a company called Commutel stating that you are listed in their directory. It is part of that same Canadian based network of scammers hitting all US companies hoping they are too big to know what their left hand is doing. They will say that this is the last issue of a fake directory and that you owe them upwards of $400. If you say the word "yes" in any context they will take that as a purchase approval….You may just need to say "Yes, this is Bob." and they take that, hang up and start charging you. They have been targeting us intermittenly for over 5 years.

If it is the first phone call HANG UP on them...
If you have been duped into confirming your shipping address, inform any legal counsel you have and use them as leverage and when the collection calls keep coming tell the "nice" person on the phone how they can reach your department and to have the best of luck in the class action suit against them
