An odd directory service for electronics

This email was just strange, so I thought I would share it. Apparently he thinks that he can sell a web directory service because when you search for a certain term plus 'TDE', his site comes up tops. Here it is (and isn't it ugly?):

Type the Prefix: TDE - Expanded to 375,000 Keywords and growing daily

ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY EXCLUSIVE

Get 100% Accuracy, Details, Phone, Fax, E-mail, RFQ links

nothing to buy . . . just type the prefix:
TDE at all popular search engines

and enter TDE sites on engine's 1st page. They all begin with
www...

Works with
Google / Yahoo / MSN / AOL / Alta Vista / Netscape / Etc.

This guy is a highly respected internet pioneer who knows what he is doing. He is also my boss. He has been publishing a couple of very successful trade journals for the electronics industry since 1987 and was the producer of major computer trade shows throughout the US from 1977 to 1987. The Prefix TDE has been around since 1993 and if you take the time to analyze it you will find its value. A TDE member had read your critique and sent me a link to your blog. I will show it to the boss on Monday.

Allen--Thanks for letting me know more about TDE.

I just found the email and the websites lacked a clear message about what is being offered and how I can benefit as a marketer. Go back and reread that email as if you hadn't heard of the company. Start at the beginning:

"Type the Prefix: TDE - Expanded to 375,000 Keywords and growing daily
    ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY EXCLUSIVE
Get 100% Accuracy, Details, Phone, Fax, E-mail, RFQ links"

Is this email for marketers or engineers? Accurate details for what purpose? How about opening with something like this:

"Electronics Industry Marketers--frustrated by low rankings in Google because your reflow oven gets buried by kitchen ovens? Our top-ranked websites get you traffic and RFQs. Since 1993 engineers have been able to just type TDE plus your keywords when searching. Here are examples..."

I hope this helps explain where I was coming from when I made this post a couple weeks ago.

    Hi Dave,
I see that you do indeed have a grasp on how the TDE prefix is used. People in electronics will bypass all the nonsense results when they prefix their Google/Yahoo searches with the Prefix "TDE" to get industry-specif results which include phone, fax, RFQ links, and E-mail links. What bothers me is your heading "another guy..." since the TDE is a membership based service dating back to 1993, started by industry pioneers and funded by our publishing and mailing list operations, based in Philadelpia. Your heading inaccurately makes us look like we are the new kid on the block. Perhaps you can go with "Another twist on search," or... "A search engine within a search engine." We will really appreciate a change since a few members have called to alert us to your wording.
