Industrial Quick Search revamps

One of the first topics I discussed on this blog was Industrial Quick Search, whose tagline “The engine inside the engine” defines what they do very well. They are a directory website service to increase visibility of industrial companies like mine. Their high Google rankings and convenient list of suppliers was quickly copied by Thomas Register (now Thomas Net). I joined their listings with the belief that the sooner a searcher can find my website and products, the better.

In recent history, Google has buried or dropped a number of their sites, including the one I am listed on. Traffic dropped significantly, but I am patient to see them recover (dropped to the levels I get from Thomas).

They haven’t been sleeping, adding content to their otherwise spartan directory sites. Now they are adding a new website, www.iqsdirectory.com which aggregates all their listings and looking to add an RFQ tool so that a visitor can blast their request to directory members. This becomes more of a ‘sticky’ website for the repeated industrial product searcher, more like GlobalSpec or ThomasNet.

But, as one person said to me about online directories recently, “what are they really selling?” In IQS’s case, its quality website traffic. Can they deliver like they used to?

  1. Have you gotten any RFQ’s from the service, I noticed that that is the new offering.

  3. Regarding your question about industrial quick search can deliver the traffic, in a word my answer would be no. At least not so far. I’m number 6 in my category (that is the bottom of the top tier) and in the past 60 days I have received 4 RFQ’s and none have been viable. The raw traffic volume doesn’t seem to support their claims either. In all fairness I am using the copy and graphics they supplied and these do not accurately represent my products but the RFQ system gives significant ad vantage to the top couple of companies in any particular listing. If a potential does scroll all the way down to my # 6 listing and clicks the RFQ button, my company does not appear rather a list of 10 companies pops up with me in the center. This gives extra weight to the top 3 and the dead last listing but those of us that paid extra to be in the top have lost all of the value. I simply didn’t do my due diligence and again in all fairness have not addressed these complaints with the management of IQS.Regards

  5. No matter what IQS claims, their traffic in no way can compare to Thomas Register or ThomasNet.com. The fact is, IQS developed their site using Thomas Register’s content, not the other way around. Go to any reputable search engine that monitors B2B traffic and you’ll see that IQS has very little traffic as compared to Thomas. Those that advertise on IQS and believe what they say their numbers are..do so at their own risk.

  7. With all the hullabaloo about who started what model first… It should be said that IQS was started by a former Thomas rep that was in on several high level meetings about this model and the intent to launch it. The model is not geared to drive traffic. It seems to be more of an RFQ generator. If a user wants an RFQ from so little info about a company it stands to reason they are a price shopper. Thomas is geared more to informing the user and helping them make the decision to buy based not solely on price but value presented. I want the user to come to my site so I can build value in my price.

  9. Their gimmick is to purchase keywords from Google, MSN, and Yahoo. They will adjust the spend to entice you to purchase in a category. Then they decrease the spend and hope to get paid. They also have been warned about SPAMMING by their web hoster. This is one I would definitely stay away from.

  11. Marketing as we define it, is making yourself visible wherever someone who can do business with you are looking. To that point IQS serves a purpose as does ThomasNet. The real issue is defining their changing role in “origination of the qualified lead process.” As an industrial manufacturer, you likely should have a presence in ThomasNet, if not IQS. The real question to ask however is what % of the leads coming from the dollars you spend in one of these vehicles is being redirected from the major search engines by way of pay per click advertising. And could you be spending less to do the very same thing?
