Trade show directory scam?

From a trade show I’ll be going to later this month:

“Dear Exhibitor

It has come to our attention that there is an organization based in Mexico that is claiming to be associated to our exhibition XXXX. We understand that they are selling advertisements to our exhibitors on the basis that they are in some way affiliated to us. This is not the case.

The company is called Expo-Guide and they are NOT associated with us or any of our exhibitions.”

Is it a scam or just independent publishing?

  1. I assume the trade show is in Novi at the end of this month? I got the same email this morning and essentialy noted but ignored it. Due diligence dictates that as an industrial marketer you have to verify any claims from publishers with their BPA statement and full media pack before spending any dollars. If this is the same show,I believe its going to be a bust this year.

  3. Yes, its the same expo, I chose to drop the name so I wasn’t spamming their name with the post.Show directories don’t really have BPAs, which make them harder to vet…Also, the publication sponsoring this event started out as a non-BPA publication.I hope its not a bust, but the mood will be a bit somber. You can visit me at booth 8032, if you like.

  5. Dave – I believe that this one may be a scam. The company name sounds similar to other postings I’ve seen where ad dollars were invested yet no publication was actually produced – online or print. In any case, with onsite event advertising, it is always best to go with the official publications and offerings – it’s the only way to be assured you’ll get the stated exposure.– Steve
