YAD: OpenFos.com

YAD? Oh that’s my acronym for “Yet Another Directory”. I don’t comment on everyone I see, unless there is something to talk about.

Today’s YAD is OpenFos.com (named Focus On Sourcing), which I found in my monthly review of referring websites. It was hard to miss, as it was ranked right after Google! A closer look at my stats showed four different directory listings for our company with similar traffic numbers each.

I suspect the high referrals from their site is due to the screen-shot they show on the listing pages. One listing record is interesting because it identifies US Government ‘Contract Listings” that we have recently won.

Googling openfos, I started finding sites like Office Supply Leads which offers a (paid) subscription to searches of government bids for certain commodities. Apparently, that is where this company is focused for revenue.

As far as a directory, OpenFos has a long way to go. For the category of three-gas incubators, they list a number of unrelated ‘suppliers’ like “Affordable Treasures”.

Once again my acronym proves true: Yadda, yadda, yadda. (Well, assuming all those hits are junk, anyway.)

  1. They are bogus. I’ve been seeing them all around my clients’ logs too. For one client they are showing as providing 50% of his traffic and 7250% more visitors than Google… but they are 100% tracked as single page visits. Complete scam whatever they are up to.

  3. Don’t know what it is or where they get their listings, but we’re welcoming the attention. One site I manage has been fairly non-existent on the engines (site hasn’t been listed in Open Directory or Yahoo), yet it’s suddenly showing up in searches for our top keyword phrases. It looks like the Big 3 are noticing the OpenFos listings, because their spiders have been loving my site recently. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

  6. You shouldn’t welcome the traffic, ‘cuz it’s ALL bogus! A closer look at the traffic shows that 100% of it is from South Korea and 100% of it is single Page View… meaning that it is a bot not real human visitors.

  8. This traffic looks useless here too. One page, that’s it. 3 different IPs.I’d also like to know why the bot is hitting so many times daily!

  10. I am noticing a large amount of hits as well on two industrial sites we’ve done. I actually registered for the site, and was planning on checking it out and possibly submitting sites to it. So the consensus is that it’s bogus?

  12. Openfos is nothing but a Korean log spammer. Also, they do regular e-mail spamming. Since the Korean company did not stop their e-mail or log spamming, we set up our servers to use conditional logging. Anything from that company goes to a special log that is deleted daily so I don’t have to look at that junk in my logs.Oh! They went 403 long before I ever started my site since I knew about them from other webmasters, but I just didn’t want to see that dumb Korean junk in the logs.AND IN MY OPINION the group APNIC should suspend these Asian clowns who pull this BS on webmasters.

  14. Although not openfos a company I have both blocked and used conditional logging, my site is now getting HAMMERED by static.twtelecom.net and I have blocked them by IP and domain. It belongs to Time Warner Corporation and running on it belongs to a company called Websense (a website filtering company). Dear Websense and Time Warner Corporation, accessing my website and using my bandwidth to use that material to make a profit by providing services to third parties is an ILLEGAL ACT and is also a VIOLATION OF POSTED USER AGREEMENTS AND LEGAL STATEMENTS. It also violates federal law (the Digital Media Copyright Act) and our site holds a formal copyright from the U.S. Library of Congress. So, Time Warner and Websense if we EVER find out that you have used any material in violation of our policies you may expect to find your companies at the local U.S. District Court. There is nothing more disgusting to me than these companies that use and leach off the property that we pay for (in the form of servers, upkeep, etc.) then take (cache) our copyrighted property to “rate” it and then SELL that product to third parties. Well, perhaps it is Websense without common sense! It is much worse than log spammers like Openfos!
